About Us
Craftsmanship Rooted in Heritage, Curated for Contemporary Living
In the heart of the Northwestern Congolian Lowland Rainforest, where sustainable rattan grows in abundance, a remarkable story of craftsmanship and enterprise unfolds. ZamAkoé brings you exceptional handcrafted rattan furniture from an artisan collective committed to international standards, environmental stewardship, and timeless design.
The Journey of Didier: From Rainforest to Recognition
Our story begins with Didier, whose intimate knowledge of rattan spans a lifetime. As a young harvester in his village, he learned the art of selecting premium rattan from the forest—work that funded his education and instilled a profound respect for sustainable materials. During school holidays, he mastered the intricate techniques of rattan weaving, skills honed over generations in his community.
After graduating with a law degree and navigating a challenging job market, Didier recognised an opportunity: the furniture he could craft with such ease was in demand, yet rarely produced to exacting standards. Drawing upon his deep expertise and entrepreneurial vision, he assembled a collective of skilled artisans and committed to a path of excellence. When the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR) established their regional centre nearby, Didier ensured his entire collective became certified, embracing rigorous international standards for sustainable practices and quality craftsmanship.
A Collective United by Mastery and Standards
Today, the ZamAkoé collective comprises INBAR-trained artisans working across urban and rural settings. In the city, a dynamic hub of young weavers regularly updates their skills through ongoing INBAR workshops, ensuring contemporary techniques complement traditional mastery. Throughout the rural network, experienced craftspeople apply generations of knowledge, all united by certified training and shared commitment to excellence.
Work is thoughtfully allocated across the collective based on individual expertise, design complexity, timeline requirements, and quality specifications. This sophisticated workflow ensures each piece receives the attention of artisans best suited to bring it to life—from the harvester who selects the rattan to the weaver who transforms it into furniture of enduring beauty.
Our Partnership: Quality Assurance Meets Market Access
As the London-based marketing arm of this exceptional collective, we provide the bridge between Central African craftsmanship and discerning UK customers. We guarantee fair pricing to our artisans, providing working capital that empowers the entire value chain—from rural harvesters to master weavers. In return, we curate designs that marry traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics, ensuring every piece meets the exacting standards UK homes demand.
Each item is inspected upon arrival at our UK warehouse, where we maintain ready stock for prompt delivery. Our vision extends beyond commerce: we're collaborating with designers to develop innovative collections that honour heritage whilst embracing modern living, creating furniture that tells a story of sustainable luxury and ethical enterprise.
